How to tell whether he cares or not?

Ok i started dating my boyfriend for a few days now.He is a friend of my cousin and he was really shy to ask me out so he got his friend to do it for him.He hung out with me and my friends the day before my birthday i started crying and he did nothing when i was he kissed me goodbye when he left.Well on my birthday he never called or anything i had to get his best friend to tell him to call me.I really don't know whether he cares or not.His friends said he was really shy but its driving me insane to know if he does or doesn't.There's this other guy that i think kinda cares more about me and really likes me but i really love my boyfriend its just he wont make any effort to be with me.
