Are we friends or could we be more..?

I reaaalllly liked this guy last year except he lives kinda far away (where my aunt and uncle live) I go there maybe 2 or 3 times a year. We texted every night last summer and in september I went back to visit. As we were saying goodbye on his porch I said "Wait, I kinda wanna kiss you right now" So he kissed me good night. He's SUPER shy. Especially around girls. Later in november, he told me we should just be friends and that he kinda liked me before but that school had started now. we remained friends and I am going to see him because he asked my uncle when I was coming out this summer. He sent me a CD (hes in a band) and signed it: cant wait to see you this summer. Apparently he told his mom that he really liked me last year and was anxious for weeks to see me. I'm just confused as to whether he liked me or not. He tells his mom a lot and I find out from her but when I talk to him he always plays it really cool. I dont know which side to believe. Should I just let him know that he is a great friend and I would never want to lose him. Or should I try to kiss him again? I want to but I know its only a summer thing...help?
